In short
MemoryBox does not collect any personal data. The app has no account, no ads, no analytics or tracking tools and no server of its own. Your photos, videos and metadata stay on your device or in your iCloud Drive.
I. Information on the processing of your data pursuant to Art. 13 GDPR
1. Controller
The controller for this app is Linus Kneser, reachable at linus@kneser.eu. Postal address: see Impressum.
2. What data is processed for what purpose?
- Your export folder: The app only reads the folder you choose (your data export). Photos, videos, overlays and the file
memories_history.jsonare read on your device only. Nothing is uploaded. - Data stored on your device: Thumbnails, the result of the folder scan, favorites, hidden memories, place names and settings are stored in the app's storage on your device. For the widget, a few thumbnails are stored in a storage area shared by the app and its widget on your device.
- Place names: To turn coordinates into place names such as “Hamburg”, the app sends the coordinates (rounded to about 2 km) to Apple's map service (MapKit). No images or other data are sent.
- Photos library: Only when you use “Save to Photos” does the app add photos and videos to your library. It does not read your library.
- Face ID / passcode: The optional lock uses the iOS device lock. The app does not receive any biometric data.
- iCloud Drive: If your export is stored in iCloud Drive, iOS downloads the files from Apple when needed. This is done by iOS, not by a service of the app.
3. Legal basis
The place-name lookup is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest is showing readable place names for your memories. All other processing takes place exclusively on your device.
4. Recipients
Apart from the place-name lookup with Apple (Apple's privacy policy), the app does not share any data. When you send memories via the share sheet, you decide who receives them.
5. How long is data stored?
Data stored by the app stays on your device as long as the app is installed and is removed when you delete the app.
6. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21). Since no personal data about you is stored by us, we usually cannot provide any information about stored data. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), for example the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of North Rhine-Westphalia, https://www.ldi.nrw.de/kontakt/ihre-beschwerde.
II. Changes to this privacy policy
We reserve the right to update this privacy policy when the app or legal requirements change. Last updated: October 2026.
